The access hatches cause operators real difficulty, particularly the older and less supple coach tour drivers.
Here are some of the problems we have discovered with the Salvador Caetano Toyota Optimo V:
Access to the windscreen fluid and engine water is very difficult and the fluid bottle is hard to open and even more difficult to close.
The nearside front access hatch contains the emergency stop button which is left exposed to all of the elements and so, in Scotland (with salt being spread on the roads to prevent icing), it corrodes badly. Ours has had to be replaced twice.
The cable to the emergency stop button gets kinked when the hatch is opened and closed and, on more than one occasion, it has become trapped in the hatch opening.
The hatch sensor which tells you if the hatch is properly closed provides a piercing alarm. That is fine, but this sensor has seized twice on our coach from new in the first two years causing a serious nuisance to ourselves and our passengers. After checking with the Inspectorate we have discovered that the alarm is not mandatory and we have now disconnected it.
The hatch to the battery isolator switch only swings through approximately 80 degrees meaning that the driver/guide has to bend double to get access and dirt from the hatch edge regularly ends up on clothing and hair.
The external lock to the emergency power door is, again, accessible to dirt and spray and we have had to replace this twice. We think its location should be rethought and it should be made far more water tight. There is, of course, no reason the lock could not be positioned away from the external emergency handle.
In addition the sensor that the lock has been unlocked has been a continual source of problems and replaced by us once already.
