What is Second Life®? According to the owners, Linden Labs:

"Second Life® is a free online virtual world imagined and created by its Residents. From the moment you enter Second Life, you'll discover a fast-growing digital world filled with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity."

This is a good definition, but barely scratches the surface of what can be achieved. I like to describe Second Life® as a far superior Sims game, but where each person you encounter is real, not a computer generated personality. These individuals interact, enjoy the environment created by others and this provides exciting opportunities to introduce them to your company and your products. A virtual person, an avatar, in Second Life cannot enjoy Joe Bloggs beer or Anne Other's burgers inside the virtual world, but they can certainly be made aware of the real life existence of those products. If your message appeals and is sufficiently powerful they will seek out those products on their return to reality. Even small companies and sole traders can see their or their products' profiles raised. Best of all, when the spark of interest has been created, the avatar can instantly become a browser of your website and on-line sales can result.

Most of these builds tend to be created from the designer's imagination, but although it is true that you cannot reproduce existing buildings exactly with Second Life® graphics, probably getting a flavour for an environment is more important.

Some of these builds are rarely visited - fewer than one person per day, but others can be extremely busy. The busy sims tend to offer networking, competitions or an environment with which people have an affinity i.e. our Virtual Scottish Highlands sim.
